The Sore Fingers Summer School is an annual teaching and performing event for Old Time and Bluegrass music which is held over one week in Kingham Hill school near the village of Chipping Norton in the Cotswold countryside. Most of the “tutors” (instructors/performers) are imported from the U.S. to teach the music and the instruments of these genres. In 2024, I was hired to teach the autoharp section and to perform in the tutor’s concerts. During the 20 hours of instruction, I covered 75 tunes by Doc Watson, Ola Belle Reed, Elizbeth Cotton, the Louvin Brothers, Emmylou Harris, Iris DeMent, and Gillian Welch. I added some variety with tunes by Gordan Lightfoot, Kate Wolf, and even a little jug band. I gave a solo performance of I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry and Rain and Snow in the Wednesday night concert and a duet of Beneath Still Waters with famed bluegrass and jazz guitarist Andy MacKenzie of North Wales in the Saturday night concert. It was an awesome experience to teach this music with my autoharp class and to collaborate with other high level musicians.
